Why Some 3D Printed Dragons Fall Apart

For a long time we avoided selling dragons. We kept seeing them break and fall apart from other sellers. After looking into the problem, we realised the issue was not the design. It was the shortcuts.

Many stores chase the lowest price, printing with cheap filament and weak infill settings to cut costs. The result is dragons that look fine in photos but break within a week of handling.

We didn't sell our first dragon until we'd built a process that produced one we'd be proud to ship.

How Our Dragons Are Built

  • Reinforced wall counts (more material in critical structural areas)
  • Calibrated infill density tuned for each design
  • Premium PLA filament from Bambu Lab
  • Heat treated joints after printing to strengthen articulation points
  • Quality inspection before every dispatch
  • Official CinderWing commercial licence on every design

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 3D printed dragon?

A 3D printed dragon is a flexible, articulated model created layer by layer with advanced 3D printing.

Ours are made from premium PLA filament for strength and detail. Available in finishes like rainbow silk, glow-in-the-dark, glitter and colour-shift, they are designed to move, pose and fidget, not just sit on display.

Our multi-colour dragons are printed using AMS (Automatic Material Switching) technology, combining multiple filaments in a single print to create distinct colour zones throughout the body.

This is not painting or post-processing — the colours are part of the print itself. Finish options include Silk (metallic sheen), Dual Silk (colour-shifting depending on viewing angle) and standard PLA. Because each print is unique, colour transitions may vary slightly between orders.

Our dragons contain small, moving joints and are not suitable for children under 3. For kids aged 3 to 6, we recommend supervised play.

PLA is non-toxic and odourless, but any 3D printed model can snap if forced. Always check for wear over time and choose a size that suits your child's age.

Every dragon is designed, printed, checked and packed by our family-owned workshop in Tangambalanga, Victoria.

Ordering from The 3D Print Smiths means supporting a local business that takes pride in quality, using premium filament and stronger print settings than mass-produced imports.

Absolutely. The articulated joints make them ideal as sensory tools, desk fidgets or stress-relieving toys.

Many customers buy our dragons as fidget dragons because they are strong, smooth and satisfying to handle.

Unlike many sellers racing to the lowest price, we focus on quality and durability. We use premium filament and tuned settings that create stronger walls, smoother joints and cleaner finishes.

All designs are official CinderWing commercial licence prints. Our dragons may cost a bit more, but they are made to last.

After printing, every dragon is heat treated to strengthen the articulated joints before it leaves our workshop. Combined with reinforced wall counts and calibrated infill settings, this extra step produces dragons that handle daily use without breaking down.

Most cheaper dragons skip this process entirely. It takes us more time. The difference shows.

PLA dragons are durable but should be kept out of direct sunlight, hot cars or near heaters. Gently dust with a soft brush or cloth.

Avoid soaking in water or harsh scrubbing, especially around the joints, to keep your dragon moving smoothly for years.

All dragons are printed to order. We do not accept change-of-mind returns once printing has begun, consistent with Australian Consumer Law for custom manufactured goods.

If your dragon arrives damaged or faulty, contact us within 30 days and we will replace it.
